First Time Skiing Since Paralysis

Yesterday was an awesome day! I couldn’t help but keep huge smile from stretching across my face as I soared down a mountain again for the first time in 15 years, since my paralysis. Thank to the wonderful foundation who takes people with limited abilities out on adventures like these, I am forever grateful!! Also grateful for my awesome family for not only getting me out there but braving the weather with me and excited that I was able to ski with my younger brother for the first time!

Joy vs. Happiness

A good friend of mine wrote these beautiful words about Joy vs. Happiness. Joy is what takes up residence within one’s soul regardless of circumstance. Happiness is a Happening, it’s temporal and weighs heavily on circumstances. If your searching for the kind of Joy that is always within your heart no matter what this world throws at you, please read these wise words.

JOY:

As I think of this word, tears start to fill my eyes.
If you would've asked my twelve year old self what this word meant, she would've told you it was nothing more than a feeling. A in-the-moment feeling of gladness or unwavering happiness, something spontaneous -- something natural. Nothing more than just that, a feeling; it carried no weight, meaning or action. But, now that same word that seemed so lifeless helps me get through each day with a purpose.

As I sit here trying to find the words to express how I feel, my mind wanders to the times spent on hills of praise and valleys of desperation. I'm not talking about the hills in our lives where we are glorifying self or the valleys of self pity. I'm talking about the raw quiet moments where we surrender our whole beings to Him and thank Him for what He has graciously done. The valley's where the world tells us lies, forcing our minds to believe it. The valley's of heartache, brokenness and sorrow. The valley's that are dry and cracked, and all you can see is the darkness you're immersed in. The moments that seem to be anything but calm.

I was sitting in a coffee shop the other day, and I was struggling to find the words to project my thoughts on this topic. I turned to a man who was sitting in the chair beside me and I asked, "where do you find joy?" He looked at me with a puzzled expression on his face and answered, "I find joy in my work, my family, and hobbies." I thanked him for his answer and continued to write in my journal. Thinking about his answers, I questioned if someone can truly find their joy in something temporary. Could this man still cling to joy if he lost everything? I wondered. Later that day, the man packed up his belongings and headed towards the door, he then turned around and said, "I hope you find joy today!" I smiled and thanked him because I knew that I would -- I knew that I would find joy that day because joy has never left my side.

My perspective changed when my happiness only lasted for a moment. You see, I tried to search for joy in many things, and everytime I was left empty. I realized that happiness relies on circumstances and joy relies on the person of Christ.
Real joy will never be found if you aren't looking to the one who created it.
Joy is found even in the darkness, the sorrow, the pain and the hurt... joy is the knowingness that you will be okay even in the chaos because you know that you have a God who will never let you go.
My perspective changed the moment this word went from a feeling to a knowingness -- the knowingness that even when my life is falling apart, I will be okay. There is light, even here -- even now.

I hope you find joy today.

Paragliding

I jumped off a mountain and Flew this past weekend thanks to Chris and Project Airtime! Paragliding was such a freeing experience and it left an impression on me like I’d never felt before. There truly is something magical about soaring above the tree tops. So grateful that my beautiful mama was able to fly in the skies right beside me too!

Here’s a quick video documenting my awesome experience:

Time with my dad and brother is always an awesome adventure. I wanted to go on a snowmobile so they made it happen with some bungee cords and straps to make sure I stayed on it. I am one blessed girl to be able to thoroughly enjoy these experiences with people I love.

Sophomore Speech:

I was able to share my story of how the Dangers of Distracted Driving forever impacted my life with a sophomore class this week. It was a bit more emotional for me because my 12 year crash anniversary is almost here and when I looked out into the crowd of these 15 and 16 year olds I couldn't help but see myself at their age, eager to venture out and discover life on my own. I just pray that by sharing with them what happened to me, they will be more conscious of the dangers that come with the privilege of driving.

New Service Dog:

Service Dogs, Inc. is the wonderful organization that rescued, trained, and brought Cowboy into my life. After hearing that Cowboy graduated to Heaven they reached out to me about possibly placing another Service Dog with me. The amazing thing about this is that Service Dogs Inc. is based out of Texas and they typically only place dogs within their state. Service Dogs Inc. is an amazing organization that adopts shelter dogs and they train them to help better the lives of people like me. They save the dog to save the human and I am beyond grateful that they are giving me this amazing opportunity again to have a four legged helper in my life. While no pup will ever take the place of my Cowboy, I am looking forward to this new chapter with Templeton. We are planning on him making the move up north to be with me sometime in the new year. Your prayers for a smooth transition are greatly appreciated.

Cowboy:

It is with a sorrowful heart that I am posting about my beautiful Cowboy’s unexpected passing due to unforeseen natural circumstances. It has been an emotional time without him but thanks to God’s Grace and family I am getting stronger with everyday. God truly enriched my life with the years that Cowboy and I shared together. I thought I knew what it was like to love a dog but Cowboy was so much more than that to me. He challenged me in ways only he could do and he helped me to grow as an individual as we grew together in our bond. He was, still is, and forever will be an extension of who I am. I know that there are many more wonderful things that God has planned for this life of mine and even though I will miss him I know that his spirit will forever be intertwined with my own. I will love you forever buddy.

My 10 Year Anniversary:

Sometimes life's greatest Blessings come from the hardest tribulations*

I can't believe it's already been 10 years since I've been living life in the seated position. As strange as it may sound, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Although this way of living definitely has it's share of frustrations & challenges, it has also taught me so much more about appreciating life's many beautiful blessings that happen daily. In a way I have been forced to 'slow my roll' & it has been such a beautiful ride so far. Thank you Lord for giving me another chance at life on this day 10 years ago, this broken road has been a truly Blessed one.

PROVERBS 3:5-8
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

The Power of Positive Thinking:

Positive thinking CAN and DOES change lives! I know this because I made the conscious decision to start changing my negative thoughts into positive thoughts & in doing this it changed my life for the Best. After I was in the car crash that altered my life forever I started to become very depressed, dwelling on all of the plans that I had made for my future no longer being possible for me to accomplish because of my injuries. I felt sorry for myself and noticed that I was becoming a very negative and unpleasant person to be around. I didn't like who I was becoming so I made the conscious decision to start changing my thoughts from negative to positive in order to become a more optimistic and delightful person.
I had to start this journey by letting go of all my thoughts & expectations of what I thought my future should have been. Doing this was one of the hardest things that I had to learn how to do for myself because I was always one to have a plan. It took some time for me to learn that I just needed to LIVE IN THE MOMENT and appreciate every moment in this life that I am so blessed to still have.
I then needed to actively monitor all of my thinking. Every time I started to think about ‘what could have been’ or anything in a negative aspect I had to catch myself and instead focus on the positive. This was a lot of work at first but the more I did it the more natural thinking positively became.

Making this life-changing decision was not the easiest thing for me to do.  It definitely took a lot of time and discipline to start noticing the overwhelming benefits that positive thinking had over my life but I am so happy that I stuck with it.  Even with all my everyday obstacles I am thrilled to say that I am the Happiest that I have Ever been because of my positive and optimistic thinking. I am proud to be living this wonderful life that I am so Blessed to still have!

I am truly blessed to have been given this opportunity to share my story with the Christian Broadcasting Network*

God Never gives us more than we Can handle*

FCCLA Amarillo

I had a wonderful time speaking at the FCCLA Leadership meeting in Amarillo on February 14th!

There was something that meant the world to me that happened after I finished my speech that day. As I was leaving, I noticed these two beautiful ladies with a very creative car shaped diorama that said drive safe on the license plate. I thought to myself that was really cool! A few minutes later the girls came up to me and asked if I was Katie Mathews. They told me that a year ago they attended my presentation at the Dallas FCCLA meeting and I inspired them to do their presentations on the Dangers of Distracted Driving! When they opened up the car there were pictures of me with my story!

I am so blessed to be doing what I'm doing and things like this just motivate me to keep on going!! :)

Advocates For Safe Roads Workshop:

My mom and I are very grateful to have been able to attend the Advocates For Safe Roads Workshop at the National Safety Council’s headquarters in Illinois on April 29th & 30th.

The Advocates For Safe Roads Workshop was an amazing opportunity that enabled me to become a better speaker and advocate against the dangers of distracted driving!

Because of this workshop we were also able to connect with other families who shared the same passion in advocating against the devastating Dangers of Distracted Driving. While it was wonderful to be able to meet others who shared a common devotion to hopefully ending this epidemic, it was also heartbreaking to learn why they have selflessly chosen to become advocates for this cause. Many of the families that we met had lost a child or family member because of the Dangers of Distracted Driving. It was so amazing to see how these strong individuals have decided to turn the unimaginable grief of losing their loved ones into sharing their stories as an example of why cell phone use or other types of distracted driving NEED to stop!!
I am forever grateful to have become a part of a nationwide cadre of survivor advocates who speak about the Dangers of Distracted Driving in a unified voice!

I appreciate FocusDriven, the HEARTS Network, and the National Safety Council for dedicating their time and hard work to put together this workshop for activists like us.

Don't worry - Be Happy!! :)

LIFE IS TOUGH ~ BUT I AM TOUGHER!

Even though the physical "disability" that I have has made my life a Lot harder in some ways, it has also given me the opportunity to have the Strongest appreciation for All of my Blessings and even the 'smallest' of my accomplishments that I work so hard for Everyday.

In my CHOOSING to look at my hardships as Opportunities... I have found that in my CHOOSING to keep a Positive state of mind that I am the Happiest that I have Ever been!!
My hope is that Anyone dealing with a physical "disability" or any other kind of "DIFFERENTability" will CHOOSE to Appreciate and take Pride in the life they are so blessed to have.

The Entire Cornell 'Big Red' Football team played incredibly, beating Yale 45-6!

Abilities Expo:

Last Saturday I was able to attend my first Abilities Expo and it was Great!!

I was so excited to meet people who could help me make a difference in my community! Where I live there is no wheelchair accessible public transportation and I’ve been trying to find a way to change this problem. I was able to meet a man who advocates for people with ‘dis’abilities and wants to help me with addressing this issue with my local government! Hopefully, together we can fix this problem!

I was able to learn about a bunch of cool things that are helpful for people like myself. Everything from 4x4 off roading wheelchairs to being able to watch and participate in wheelchair accessible sports were there! The Expo was also a wonderful way to meet people in my area who shared many of the same physical challenges I face on a day-to-day basis!
One person in particular stood out to me though… I was able to meet Auti Angel from the TV show: Push Girls! She showed me a few new dance moves and was such an inspiration to: Keep 0n Keepin’ on - With a little dance in my roll!!

We were invited to go to a fishing tournament specifically for people with physical disabilities (spinal cord injuries & amputees) - We were so blessed to find a boat that had three experienced fishermen onboard.

We weren't getting much action in the jetty so they took us out further in hopes of better luck... 0o boy! We ended up catching a 5 Foot Black Tip shark!! when we got her a board we found out she was pregnant! Our captain, ended up playing Doctor and performed a C-section and all five babies swam away to start their lives!
It was a Team effort and I'm s0o glad I was able to be a part of it!!
